Tie streamers to the backs or chairs and balloons to the corners of the table. “Princess and the Frog” has been heralded as the first Walt Disney cartoon to feature an African-American Disney Princess: the strong, lovely, resourceful Princess Tiana, who manages to morph from a waitress to a frog to a princess during the course of one film. The film also has earned renown as a lively chronicle of life in the deep South, featuring everything from jazzy tunes to sumptuous gumbo to a little bit o’ black magic added to the mix….

What many modern viewers may not realize, however, is that this acclaimed Disney feature claims its deepest roots in an age-old fairy tale. None other than the Brothers Grimm wrote the original version of “The Frog Prince,” a tale that is in fact acknowledged as the first in their collection. Only don’t look for any frog princesses or magical kisses in the original “Grimm” tale; indeed, the original “Frog Prince” story concerns a spoiled princess who transforms a frog into a prince—not with a kiss-but by throwing him violently against a wall!

It is through sanitized, romanticized American versions of “The Frog Prince” that the image of the princess is softened a bit, and that the concept of kissing a frog to transform him into a prince was born. About eight motion picture versions of “The Frog Prince” have been filmed throughout the years (including a Muppet version, starring Kermit of course and released in 1971), but “Princess and the Frog” is perhaps the most revolutionary; not only because of its portrayal of an African-American Disney Princess, and its status as the first hand-drawn Disney film since 2004, but because—in this version—the princess joins the prince in his ‘ribbeting' adventures. And it’s the adventure of a lifetime.
